REGULATIONS

Group B cars were divided into 4 different classes pertaining to their engine displacement;

B-12: 2000 cc +

B-11: 1600~1999 cc

B-10: 1300~1599 cc

B-9: 1299 cc or less

The FISA (FIA) mandated that forced induction engines (turbo and/or supercharger) would get a multiplication factor of 1.4 to calculate their final engine displacement figure. Meaning that, in example, a twin-charged Lancia Delta S4, although it had a 1759 cc engine, would get a final cc rating of 2463 cc. The final adjusted figure was used to determine minimum weight and maximal tire width for the particular model.

Race minimum weights;

~1000 cc = 590 kg (1300 lb)

1001~1299 cc = 675 kg (1490 lb)

1300 ~1599 cc = 750 kg (1650 lb)

1600~1999 cc = 820 kg (1810 lb)

2000~2499 cc = 890 kg (1960 lb)

2500~2999 cc = 960 kg (2115 lb)

3000~3999 cc = 1100 kg (2425 lb)

4000~4999 cc = 1235 kg (2725 lb)

5000+ cc = 1300 kg (2865 lb)

Maximal tire width combinations (for one side of the vehicle – staggered setups allowed);

~1000 cc = 16

1001~1299 cc = 17

1300 ~1599 cc = 18

1600~1999 cc = 20

2000~2999 cc = 22

3000~3999 cc = 24

4000~4999 cc = 26

5000+ cc = 28

That’s a lot of tread. For example, my hypothetical mk2 supra turbo would be 3862.2cc giving it, say, 10"/14" staggered tires. A kei car could run 8" tires all around. Madness.

i think my old truck is solid into the b-12 class, 5700 cc, 3800 lbs, and the tires are a solid 20" per side...............

OK, so, we’ll start with the Audi R8 LMS. It’s already based on a production car, even:

Kinja'd!!!

5204 cc V10 (5200 in LMS trim, but, well, we’re not running in GT3, now, are we?), up to 577 hp in LMS trim, 1225 kg in LMS trim.

Now, let’s put the quattro system back on the car. I’d like to note at this point that a US-spec R8 V10 Plus is 3684 lbs, or 1671 kg. But, a lot of weight can be taken out. A lot of weight, I’d suspect, given all the luxuries, and the fact that the LMS has carbon fiber bits in a lot of places.

28" of tire should be enough... the previous-gen R8 LMS in Blancpain spec had 10.6" front, 12.2" rear. Make it 12" front and 14" rear, call it good.

My attempt at going for the other extreme...

Honda S660 Type R.

Start with this:

Kinja'd!!!

Now, that’s a 660 cc turbo I3. We’re going to, uh, make that more turbo. A lot more turbo. Like quadrupling the horsepower a lot more turbo... and that’s still only going to be 230ish hp. Punch out the bore a bit, stroke it, to get more power yet - 714 cc is OK. Maybe 250 hp, then. But, that’s OK... because we’re also going to go to absurd extremes, this is Group B.

Carbon fiber all the things, get down to that 590 kg, even with the AWD system that you’ll add. (You’ll also make it not a convertible). Now, you only get 16" of tire, but I’d say 7" in the front, 8-9" in the back should be enough, with how light it is.

And now, for the really silly one, but bear with me here...

Prius GT-Four.

Mid-mounted 2GR-FSE... with a supercharger. (That is something that Toyota’s actually sold, mind you.) 4838 cc per the rules... and it has the transmission from the RX 450h and Highlander Hybrid, too. Front mounted electric motor, big honkin’ Li-ion battery between the occupants. It’s allowed 26" of wheels, I’m gonna allocate the tire widths to be 12 and 14".

Oh, and it must be based on the TRD Prius somehow, and it absolutely must have the TRD Prius wheels:

Kinja'd!!!

If it has to have a carbon fiber tub to be anywhere near the weight limit, it gets one. This is Group B, after all.

Charlie gets a stroker kit bumping displacement to a massive 1.8L and a twin-charge setup putting it in the 2.5L class. Weight is low enough now that the turbo and sc additions should make me scrape by on the minimum weight. Still RWD. 10s up front, 12s out back. All Formula Atlantic forged internals should make me good for 350-400 wheel and 10k rpms. Bodywork remains untouched because patina.
